FAQ: IICRC Certification and the WRT Exam

Straight answers to what people actually ask before booking a class: what IICRC certification is, how to get it, what it costs, how renewal works, and how to study for the WRT exam without wasting a fortnight.

    About the certification

    What is IICRC certification?

IICRC certification is a credential issued by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification to an individual technician, not to a company. You earn it by taking a class from an approved instructor and passing the IICRC-administered exam. Each certification maps to a published standard — WRT to the ANSI/IICRC S500, AMRT to the S520. It stays with you when you change employers, and it is renewed on the IICRC's cycle rather than held for life. Our IICRC certification guide covers every credential.

How do I get IICRC certified?

Pick the credential you need, register with an IICRC-approved school, attend the class in person or by livestream, and pass the exam at the end. For most people the first credential is IICRC WRT certification, because it has no prerequisite and is required before ASD and AMRT. There is no experience requirement to register. Study the standard before you walk in rather than after — you sit the exam on the last day. Upcoming dates by state are in the class directory.

How much does IICRC certification cost?

It is several separate charges rather than one price: class tuition set by the school, the IICRC exam fee, optionally a copy of the standard, and later renewal with continuing education credits. Tuition varies because each approved school prices its own class. Ask what a quoted fee includes before comparing two schools — some bundle the exam and the standard, some do not. Many restoration employers pay for the class outright, so ask before you self-fund. The component breakdown is on our IICRC certification cost page.

How do I renew my IICRC certification?

You renew on the IICRC's cycle by paying the renewal fee and reporting continuing education credits from approved courses. Some CECs are free, offered by manufacturers and industry associations; others are paid. Treat renewal as an annual line item rather than a surprise. If a certification lapses you follow the IICRC's reinstatement process instead of simply paying late, which can mean retaking the class and exam. Confirm the current cycle, CEC requirement and fee with the IICRC directly —. See the certification guide.

    Is IICRC certification worth it?

For anyone working water losses it is the credential the industry recognises. Carriers, franchises and customers ask whether the technician on site is certified, and many firms will not send an uncertified technician out unsupervised. Beyond hiring, the material is the reason: category and class calls, psychrometry and drying goals are what separate a defensible scope from one that gets cut. Whether it raises your pay depends on your employer and market — we do not publish salary figures we cannot substantiate. Start with water damage restoration certification.

    The exam

How long is the WRT course?

The WRT class is commonly delivered as a three-day course by an approved instructor, with the exam at the end. Days are long and the material is dense — categories and classes, psychrometry, drying, equipment, safety and documentation, all from the S500. That compression is why people who arrive having never read the standard struggle: there is no gap between the last lesson and the exam. Confirm current instructional hours with your school. Full detail on the WRT certification page.

Do you need WRT before ASD or AMRT?

Yes. WRT is the prerequisite for both ASD and AMRT, and WRT itself has no prerequisite — which is why it is nearly always the first credential a restorer earns. ASD goes deeper into psychrometry and difficult assemblies; AMRT moves you into mold remediation under the S520, with its own containment and clearance requirements — study for that one at AMRTTraining.com. Neither replaces WRT or renews it.

Can I get IICRC certified online?

You can attend an approved class by livestream and earn the same credential as someone in the room. What does not exist is a self-paced video course with no live instructor and no IICRC-administered exam. Be careful with results promising free online IICRC certification: free study material is real — our practice tests, flashcards and calculators cost nothing — but the certification itself involves a class fee and an exam. Livestream dates are in the class directory.

What is on the IICRC WRT exam?

Everything in the ANSI/IICRC S500: water categories and how they deteriorate, the four classes of loss, psychrometry including dew point, GPP and vapor pressure, the drying process, equipment selection across refrigerant, LGR and desiccant dehumidifiers, health and safety with PPE escalating by category, inspection and documentation, and professional responsibilities. Questions are written as job scenarios rather than definitions — you are asked what to do next. Work through them on the free IICRC WRT practice test.

What is the difference between Category and Class in water damage?

Category describes how contaminated the water is; Class describes how much water the materials hold and how hard it will be to evaporate. Categories 1 to 3 run from a clean source to heavily contaminated. Classes 1 to 4 rank the evaporation load, from minimal wet porous material up to deeply held moisture in hardwood, plaster and concrete. The two scales are independent: a loss can be Category 1 and Class 4 at once. Confusing them is one of the most common exam mistakes.

How should I study for the WRT exam?

Learn the vocabulary first, then practise decisions. Start with WRT flashcards so the standard becomes readable, then work practice questions and read the explanation on every one — including those you got right, because the reasoning is what the scenario questions test. Run real numbers through the psychrometric calculators until dew point and GPP stop feeling abstract. Two weeks of consistent evenings beats cramming the night before.

Are there free IICRC WRT practice tests?

Yes. Ten sample questions with explanations and a scored twenty-question test are on the exams page with no account and no email, and the flashcard deck is free the same way. A free registered account adds one full-length timed mock exam. What to avoid is exam answer dumps: the pool rotates, most leaked files quote older editions of the S500, and using leaked exam content is a certification integrity problem rather than a shortcut.

Can I use the calculators on the job?

That is what they are for. The GPP, psychrometric, dehumidifier sizing and air mover calculators are built to work on a phone in a wet building, not only at a desk. Enter temperature and relative humidity and you get grains per pound, dew point and vapor pressure without a chart. They are free and need no account. Treat sizing outputs as a starting point you verify against daily moisture readings, exactly as the S500 intends.

What does GPP mean and why does it matter?

GPP is grains per pound: the weight of water vapour held in one pound of dry air. Unlike relative humidity it does not move when temperature changes, which makes it the honest measure of whether you are removing water from a building. Falling GPP in the drying chamber means dehumidification is winning; flat GPP with equipment running means something is wrong. Comparing indoor with outdoor GPP is how you decide whether ventilating helps. Run yours through the GPP calculator.
